For some reason, simply the act of taking notice draws more of what I notice. So in the case of butterflies, I think that simply by noticing all the ways in which a butterfly may manifest in your life will cause more of them to manifest. The synchronicity with your son is certainly no accident... it's exciting! Ask and it is given… :) Your post reminds me in many ways of the story on our site called “Dropping a Shoe.”
